Protocol

A set of instructions required to initiate and maintain communication between sender and receiver devices. A set of rules and restrictions that define how data is transmitted over a network medium (for example, twisted-pair cable, wireless transmission, and so on). Protocols make computer-to-computer communications possible. Set of rules and formats, semantic and syntactic, permitting information systems to exchange information.
