A fire-suppressant material that converts to toxic gases at 900 degrees Fahrenheit and depletes the ozone layer of the atmosphere and is therefore usually replaced by an alternative material. An abbreviation for halogenated hydrocarbon coined by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. Halon nomenclature follows the following rule: if a hydrocarbon compound contains the elements CaFbClcBrdIe, it is designated as Halon abcde (terminal zeros are dropped). Thus, Halon 1211 is chlorobromodifluoromethane, etc.
